Rupert Grint said he can “pick and choose” his movie and TV projects since he wrapped the Harry Potter movies due to his earnings from the franchise
Grint’s first movie since 2023, Nightborn, premieres at the Berlin Film Festival on Feb. 14
The Associated Press estimated in 2024 that Grint had earned roughly $32.74 million from playing Ron Weasley in the Potter movies
Rupert Grint is back with his first movie in three years, and he’s unbothered by acting infrequently.
The actor, 37, stars in Nightborn, which makes its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival on Saturday, Feb. 14.
The Harry Potter alum chatted with Variety in an interview published Friday, Feb. 13, and spoke about how he chooses projects to take on.
“I love working, but I also just love being at home, hanging out and being a dad. I’m not ridiculously ambitious,” Grint said. He shares daughters Wednesday, 5, and Goldie, who turns 1 in April, with his partner Georga Groome.
Grint also told the outlet he is looking to make “one thing every year” moving forward and acknowledged he and his Harry Potter costars Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe are able to be picky due to the earnings they received from the Harry Potter movies.
“I’m very aware of that privilege,” he told Variety. “It was hard work, but those movies have allowed us to pick and choose, which is just such a gift. Obviously it doesn’t mean you’re always going to choose the right thing. But I do feel very lucky for that.”

Grint described making the Potter movies, released between 2001 and 2011, as “an absolute constant in his life” that helped him “appreciate not being on set” and “really value downtime” in the years after the franchise wrapped.
In November 2024, the Associated Press estimated that Grint had earned roughly 24 million British pounds from his performances as Ron Weasley, which is roughly $32.74 million.
As Variety noted, he has only appeared in a handful of acting roles — including four seasons of the television series Servant — since 2020. Grint last appeared in a movie with a supporting part in M. Night Shyamalan’s 2023 Knock at the Cabin, and he is stepping into a Finnish horror tale with Nightborn.

“With dreams of starting a perfect family, Saga (Seidi Haarla) and her British husband Jon move to the isolated house deep in the Finnish forest where Saga spent much of her childhood,” reads a synopsis for Nightborn, which Grint and Haarla costar in with Pamela Tola, Pirkko Saisio, Rebecca Lacey and John Thomson.
“But as soon as their baby is born, despite the reassurances of everyone around her, Saga knows something is terribly wrong. As their marriage starts to crack and Jon struggles to support his wife, only Saga suspects the disturbing truth about their newborn child.”
