Jennifer Love Hewitt reveals the “one negative thing” she can say about pal Betty White
Hewitt and White costarred in the 2011 Hallmark movie The Lost Valentine
The 9-1-1 actress tells PEOPLE she and White remained friends until “the day she passed” in 2021
Jennifer Love Hewitt has nothing but nice things to say about Betty White, even though her pal did have one negative trait.
In a January interview with PEOPLE, Hewitt, 46, shared memories of her friendship with the late White, which began when they costarred in the 2011 Hallmark original movie The Lost Valentine. In the movie, the 9-1-1 star plays Susan, a journalist who makes it her mission to find out what happened to an older woman named Caroline’s (White) husband after he disappeared during World War II.
Hewitt shared that working with White, who died in 2021, was a full circle moment that took her right back to watching The Golden Girls with her grandmother.
“Betty was very special to me because growing up, my grandmother was my best friend, and I would sleep over at her house all the time, and our favorite show to watch together was The Golden Girls,” Hewitt tells PEOPLE. “And I fully believe that that’s why I’m part 95-year-old as just a person because I literally grew up watching Rose and Blanche and Dorothy and Sophia, and they were the funniest women to me ever. So, it was a very special thing.”

The I Know What You Did Last Summer actress adds that White “is, well, first of all, a national treasure. Everyone knew that and she still is.”
Hewitt recalls finding out she would be working with White on their Hallmark movie was “a dream come true.” She says, “Betty was always just one of my favorite people. So, when I got that movie and I knew that I was going to get to work with her, I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, not only am I going to get to work with her, but this is my grandmother.’ “
“Then, I met Betty and she was just everything I wanted her to be and times a million,” Hewitt continues. “She was just the most wonderful woman. We became best friends and we stayed that way up until the day she passed. And she just was just so incredibly special.”
However, she adds that there is just “one negative thing” she can say about her costar: “She did cheat at Scrabble a lot.” Hewitt adds, “She was the best.”
Hewitt and White went on to work together again in an episode of White’s TV Land comedy Hot in Cleveland in 2014.
In addition to gaining Hewitt a lifelong friend, The Lost Valentine also proved to be a special project thanks to the way it shined a spotlight on veterans’ stories.
“That movie was so special. It was so beautiful. My grandfather was in the Army, my uncles … So, just sort of being able to tell that side of the story and then watching Betty really pay homage to her husband, Allen [Ludden], in the scenes when she was missing her husband in the movie. It was really lovely … I loved doing that project,” she says.
The Lost Valentine is available to stream on Hallmark+. New episodes of 9-1-1 air Thursdays at 8:00 p.m. EST on ABC and stream the next day on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+.
