Princess Catherine faced a change in title after the late Queen Elizabeth’s death in 2022, which reportedly she felt “concerned about”. After the death of the late Queen, King Charles took to the throne.
Catherine’s concerns about taking the title were explored in the new biography William and Catherine, The Monarchy’s New Era: The Inside Story by author Russell Myers.
He wrote: “Courtiers said that while Catherine had a full appreciation of the history associated with the role, she was determined to find her own path.
“But Catherine had also privately expressed to William and to Charles her reservations about taking over the title, conscious of the British public’s exceptional feeling for, and connection to, Princess Diana even 25 years after her death.”
A former senior aide to William and Catherine also said that Catherine thought the title would result in her being compared to Diana, when the princess is determined to take her own path within the Royal Family.

The aide told Myers: “She is very aware the pace that she wants to progress and the way in which she sees her future role within the institution, and I think when she was convinced to take the title on, and there was a bit of convincing, she felt that while there would be inevitable comparisons with Diana, she could manage it in her own way while having full respect for the way Diana carved out a very different role for herself within the royal family.”
Catherine herself has never spoken about her initial hesitation in becoming The Princess of Wales.
Before Queen Elizabeth II’s death, William and Catherine were known as The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
These were titles given to them on their 2011 wedding day.
When Prince William becomes King in the future, it is likely that the next Prince of Wales will be his eldest son and heir Prince George, with The Princess of Wales title then expected to be given to George’s future partner.
