TULSA, Okla. –

Music, movement and painting come together in real time during an upcoming performance by Crescent Window, offering audiences a front-row seat to the creative process as it unfolds.

The event, scheduled for Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. at Liggett Studio, is designed as a live “conversation” between artistic mediums. Instead of performing separately, the artists respond directly to one another, creating a continuous feedback loop of sound, movement and visual art.

Jazz vocalist and performer Annie Ellicott, multidisciplinary performance artist Cara Cox, and inventor and multi-instrumentalist Paully Steele make up Crescent Window. Together, they explore how different forms of expression can influence and reshape one another in the moment.

During the performance, musicians will watch Cox paint live on stage and treat her brushstrokes like a musical score. As the music evolves, Cox responds physically, using movement inspired by the sound to guide her painting. That movement, in turn, influences the musicians, creating an ongoing exchange between sight and sound.

Steele said the concept grew out of the group’s experience live-scoring a screening of “Dante’s Inferno” last summer. Wanting to push the idea further, the group reversed the traditional roles.

“Usually, visual artists respond to music,” Steele said. “This time, we wanted the music to respond to the creation of the artwork.”

The music itself is intentionally wide-ranging, blending ambient and avant-garde sounds with moments that are heavy, playful, beautiful or unsettling. The group’s name, Crescent Window, reflects their inspiration from waveforms and the idea of expansion and collapse — how new things are created through change.

Cox’s performance draws from the Suzuki and Viewpoints methods, which focus on time, space and spontaneous movement. The approach allows her to react instinctively to the music while painting, making each moment of the performance unrepeatable.

Organizers say the event is designed to be approachable for audiences who may not be familiar with experimental art. No prior knowledge is needed — viewers can simply watch, listen and experience how the artists influence one another in real time.

More information about the performance is available on Crescent Window’s Instagram page, @crescentwindow.
