King Charles was issued a dire warning about the future of the monarchy after the latest embarrassing updates regarding his disgraced brother, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. The former Duke of York, who has lost his titles, honours and home and now has the status of a commoner, was arrested last Thursday on suspicion of misconduct in public office during his time as the UK’s trade envoy between 2001 – 2011.
He was held in custody for 11 hours before being released under investigation. The arrest came after the latest tranche of Jeffrey Epstein files revealed that he may have shared confidential information with the convicted sex offender. Andrew has always denied any wrongdoing.
Last week’s arrest brought a fresh wave of humiliation for the Royal Family, who have tried to distance themselves from Andrew.
The King released a statement on the day of Andrew’s arrest, which was also the day of his 66th birthday, saying: “I have learned with the deepest concern the news about Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and suspicion of misconduct in public office.
“What now follows is the full, fair and proper process by which this issue is investigated in the appropriate manner and by the appropriate authorities. In this, as I have said before, they have our full and wholehearted support and co-operation.
“Let me state clearly: the law must take its course. As this process continues, it would not be right for me to comment further on this matter. Meanwhile, my family and I will continue in our duty and service to you all. Charles R.”
But now a royal author has urged the King to fully cooperate with the police and also ensure his staff do so as well, in order to save the public’s trust in the monarchy.
Writing for the Daily Mail, author Andrew Lownie said: “If the King is serious about cooperating with an investigation, he needs to ensure that protection officers, secretaries, equerries and valets talk to the police.”
He warned: “Without a new spirit of openness, the monarchy will not survive – neither will it deserve to.”
Andrew has denied any wrongdoing over his Epstein links, but has not directly responded to the latest allegations.
