Tom Welling is opening up about how he spent his off time while filming Smallville

Tom Welling says he didn’t spend much social time with his Smallville costars off set — largely because he was exhausted from filming and needed time to himself.
Welling, now 48, starred as Clark Kent/Superman in the hit WB series, which ran for 10 seasons from 2001 to 2011.
Speaking on a panel at the Vancouver FanExpo 2026, Welling said that when he wasn’t working, “I would disappear.”
Each season, Welling said, took about 10 months to film.

“I only saw everybody on set because I don’t know about you guys at your jobs, but the last thing you really want to do, when you’re not working, is hang out with your co-workers,” Welling said.
He continued: “I would be done at like 6:00 in the morning on a Saturday and have be back at set Monday at 5:00 [the next morning]. I would just go home and do nothing and hang out with my dogs. I didn’t have any bandwidth for anything else.”
Welling currently hosts the Smallville rewatch podcast TalkVille with his former costar Michael Rosenbaum (who played Lex Luther), and he’ll star in the upcoming Iliza Shlesinger-penned comedy Chasing Summer, which will make its debut at next year’s Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah.
In a recent interview with PEOPLE, the actor spoke to PEOPLE about his life in Northern California, where he lives on a ranch with his wife Jessica Rose and their two children.

“We have American sport horses, jumpers, and we breed. I’m more than happy to help, but she’s the captain of that ship,” he said of the couple’s ranch, adding, “It’s peaceful. And it feels real.”
