Princess Kate Middleton is a woman with a plan — at least according to royal author Russell Myers.
“She’s often been criticized about how she’s taken a long time to get used to public speaking or a long time to formulate the real ideas that she wants to take forward in her royal role, but I think she’s the real strategist,” Myers told Us Weekly exclusively while promoting his upcoming book, William and Catherine: The Monarchy’s New Era: The Inside Story.
Myers claimed that Kate, 44, is “the one who’s thinking of the future,” and Prince William “relies on her an awful lot.”
The author said there is a “really interesting dynamic” between William, 43, and Kate as they constantly meld their personal and professional lives.
“He relies on her personally, professionally and emotionally as well,” Myers explained.
While writing this book, Myers told Us that his “biggest surprises” came from how involved Kate actually is in the day-to-day duties of the royal family.
“When you think about Catherine, you think of this glamorous woman who represents the monarchy so fantastically well,” he said. Myers explained that “when you speak to people who have known her for years,” there is a sense that Kate is “working on a greater scale.”
Details about how William and Kate are preparing to take over the monarchy have been reported for years. Myers told Us that after “speaking to people very, very close” to William and Kate, it’s evident that they have “a totally different vision for the monarchy” going forward.
“It needs to be accountable. It needs to speak to the younger generation, not only at home but abroad,” he said. “It needs to be tapped into the issues that are important to young people — whether that’s climate change or homelessness or trying to affect generational change for young kids — which is really, really important to what Catherine is trying to do.”
They also need to “create a system that works for the people,” Myers added.
“What they have tried to do is tried to get their family home life right and then work on the public profile,” the author shared. “That’s very, very different to how the monarchy has been structured in generations beforehand.”
William and Kate are using this apparent change as an example for their three kids — Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7 — as well.
“They’ve definitely wanted to create a different model for the future,” Myers said, acknowledging how the couple got through a “very, very emotional period” following both King Charles III and Kate’s respective cancer diagnoses.
Charles announced his cancer diagnosis in February 2024, and his treatments are still ongoing. Kate, meanwhile, went public with her diagnosis in March 2024. She announced in January 2025 that she is officially in remission.
“He’s still a young man with a young family, and I think he will really try and hold on to every second he’s got with his father,” Myers said of William, explaining the the Prince of Wales is still trying to “think of a future in front of him that doesn’t involve taking on the weight of responsibility of the crown just yet.”
William and Catherine: The Monarchy’s New Era: The Inside Story is set to be released on Tuesday, March 10.
