TV favourites Marvin and Rochelle Humes made a surprise stop in Wirral over the weekend, delighting staff and customers at a well-known local chippy. The married presenters, who rose to fame as part of JLS and The Saturdays, dropped into Parkgate Fish & Chips on Sunday, February 22, for a casual bite to eat.

Sharing their appreciation afterwards, the owners described the pair as “gorgeous” and said it was “always such a pleasure” to welcome them back – hinting that the couple had paid the shop a visit before.

Situated along The Parade with sweeping views across the Dee Estuary, Parkgate Fish & Chips has long enjoyed a reputation as one of Wirral’s favourite spots for a traditional meal – and this weekend, it added two familiar faces to its list of satisfied customers.

It’s regularly voted one of the best chip shops on Merseyside, and last year won a Blue Ribbon accolade in the 2023/24 Good Food Awards.

The fish and chip shop has a food van alongside Chows Eating House, which serves up a salt and pepper range. The van has been spotted at festivals and events across the region including Radio One Big Weekend and We Are Wirral.

Now, the chippy on wheels can be found in Liverpool city centre once a week. The food van is at Princes Dock every Tuesday – weather permitting – from 12pm until 8pm.

However, Marvin and Rochelle, who front BBC’s Hit List, visited the actual shop itself. Photos posted to social media showed Marvin tucking into a tray of chips, alongside snapshots of freshly fried portions straight from the fryer.

The post quickly drew plenty of attention online, with locals flooding the comments. Some admitted they were gutted to have missed the visit, while others joked that stopping at the chippy is practically mandatory when in the area. One comment read: “You have to go – it’s the law when you visit Parkgate.”

On his own social media, Marvin quipped that he would be “back in the gym tomorrow” to burn it off. Rochelle has family ties to Wirral. Her uncle is former England international Paul Ince, who lives in nearby Neston.

Liverpool ECHO’s What’s On editor Hannah Rees previously reviewed the chippy on wheels. She said: “I ordered the fish and salt and pepper chicken meals, both served with a free drink, which brought my total bill to £25. After a five minute wait, I was handed a paper bag filled with delicious-smelling food and made the five minute walk back to the ECHO office.

“As I took the mammoth-sized meals out of the paper bag I was immediately hit by the incredible smells of Chinese salt and pepper seasoning and vinegar.

“The meals were absolutely huge. The fish had a golden-coloured, crispy batter and the accompanying chips were cooked to perfection. I’m not usually fussed by mushy peas but these were lovely and really flavoursome.

“Sometimes I’ve found salt and pepper chicken can be more batter, than meat, but these were really chunky cuts. The salt and pepper chips were a little on the crispy side for me, but it didn’t stop my colleagues from devouring them once left on a desk.

“Although pricier than your bog standard meal deal, it was definitely an enjoyable midweek treat that left me stuffed.”
