Selena Gomez and her husband, Benny Blanco, aren’t at this evening’s Actor Awards. The actress posted a shot of herself at home on her Instagram Story during the red carpet:
Her co-stars, Martin Short and Steve Martin, weren’t at the ceremony either following tragic news this week that Short’s daughter had passed away.
In a statement, the family told People, “It is with profound grief that we confirm the passing of Katherine Hartley Short. The Short family is devastated by this loss and asks for privacy at this time. Katherine was beloved by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought into the world.”
Gomez is nominated with the rest of her Only Murders in the Building cast for the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series award.
Gomez has been prioritizing her acting career in more recent years, appearing in projects like Emilia Perez and Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, in addition to the nominated Hulu mystery-comedy series, which was renewed for a sixth season.
In November, she spoke to Apple Music’s Zane Lowe about why she set her music career aside to act more. “I think I just maybe got a little tired of [the pop star life],” she said. “And I think what I get so much out of film and TV, or any sort of performative creativity that isn’t music actually, it is another feeling that I can’t really explain other than I connect with a character. I connect with the character’s pain, or I connect with the character’s joy or relationships, and with mothers and fathers. And all of that’s so interesting to me, and I can dive into somebody else’s world. But when you put yourself out there, and it’s just you, it can be a bit more frightening. And I think I was just a little tired of it.”
