Marty Supreme had everything going for it: record-breaking box office for distributor A24, deafening online buzz, and nine Oscar nominations.
But then it hit the net.
Josh Safdie‘s table-tennis film, starring Timothée Chalamet as Marty Mauser, a character loosely based on the exploits of real-life ping-pong ace Marty Reisman, is running out of steam — and fast — in the final stages of the Oscar contest. Not only did Chalamet lose the Actor Award to Sinners star Michael B. Jordan on Sunday night, but it was shut out entirely at the Actor Awards — as it had been the week prior at the BAFTAs, where it tied the dubious record of 11 losses without a win.
