Sheffield’s independent music scene is due to be chronicled in a new book by journalist and DJ Mag contributor Daniel Dylan-Wray.

Published on 7th May by White Rabbit, Groovy, Laidback and Nasty is described as “the first ever truly definitive history” of the South Yorkshire city’s music scene and features the likes of the Human League, Toddla T, Cabaret Voltaire, Warp Records, Clock DVA, Heaven 17 and much more.

The book, which contains over 150 interviews, traces a line from Peter Stringfellow’s club promotion days in the late ’60s to Toddla T’s teenage breakthrough in the late 2000s, via Warp, FON and seminal nightclubs such as Jive Turkey, Niche and Gatecrasher, as well as the noughties’ so-called ‘New Yorkshire’ movement.

“I’ve been writing about Sheffield – a city that’s been my home for over 20 years – and its rich, varied music for many years. However it’s always felt like a place that has been overlooked and under documented compared to other cities’ musical histories, with lots of gaps left and people forgotten along the way”, wrote Dylan-Wray in a press release.

He continued: “Attempting to fill those holes, while also expanding even deeper and wider into territory old and new – including bands, producers, DJs, nightclubs and record labels – has been a gargantuan undertaking. Covering 60+ years of music and social history in a way that feels thorough yet accessible is a tall order but I feel honoured to be entrusted to tell so many people’s wonderful stories in this book.”

Dylan-Wray has written pieces for DJ Mag about Belfast surrealist comic artist Goneplace, Mischa Haller’s Not Going Home photobook of late ’90s ravers and this piece marking the 5th anniversary of Andrew Weatherall.
