Bobby Witt Jr. is the starting shortstop for the Kansas City Royals, and that’s not changing anytime soon.
However, the AL Central club could use an offensive jolt at second base, as Jonathan India and Michael Massey both had rough years in the batter’s box last season.
Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer believes a call to the rebuilding Washington Nationals for CJ Abrams could help them achieve that.
“With Bobby Witt Jr. at shortstop and Maikel García at third base, Kansas City presumably likes Abrams as a second base candidate,” wrote Rymer. “That could be a better spot for him defensively, as his baseline as a 20/20 threat would make him a nice offensive addition as well.”
Still just 25, Abrams has three straight seasons with 18-20 home runs and an OPS of .712 or higher. As a speed threat on the bases, he’s a candidate to become one of baseball’s next 30-30 guys, something the Royals would certainly welcome.
Royals send LHP Noah Cameron, No. 2 prospect to Nationals in trade idea
In this trade idea, the Royals let go of left-handed starting pitcher Noah Cameron and their No. 2-ranked prospect on MLB Pipeline, catcher Blake Mitchell.
“For their parts, Cameron is part of a rotation surplus, and Mitchell is looking up at Salvador Perez and Carter Jensen on the Royals’ depth chart,” wrote Rymer. “He deserves a clearer way forward in another organization.”
Cameron impressed in his first taste of big league action last season, making history as the second rookie pitcher to allow one run or fewer in each of his first five starts. He finished last season with a 2.99 ERA and 1.099 WHIP in 138.1 innings.
Kansas City selected Mitchell eighth overall in the 2023 draft, and the 21-year-old hit two home runs with a .668 OPS in 49 games at High-A Quad Cities in 2025.
