Travis Kelce has signed on to play another season with the Kansas City Chiefs after weeks of speculation the 36-year-old tight end could retire. He confirmed the news on the New Heights Instagram account and spoke on The Pat McAfee Show earlier today about how he arrived at the decision. Turns out, his fiancée, Taylor Swift, was a major factor and inspiration.
“Without a doubt, without a doubt [watching her be on top of her field inspire me to continue playing],” he told the host. “We share the same love for what we do and fortunately, we’ve had this desire since we were kids in our selective professions.”
He pointed to her music career, saying, “It’s just amazing to see her keep going to the table. Keep finding new things to write about. Keep finding new melodies and things like that. And on top of that, still seeing her have that love and joy in what she does, of course that’s motivating. That’s motivating for anyone to see, let alone you know, [me watching] my fiancée and knowing that I’m going through something where I’m trying to figure out exactly what the future holds for me. Something like that definitely motivates me to say, ‘You know what? I’m not done either. I’ve still got some ideas in the back of my mind. I’ve still got some juice left to play this game.’”
Last year, Kelce spoke about how supportive Swift was of him continuing his football career when he contemplated retiring ahead of the 2025–2026 season.
“She’s fully encouraging me to enjoy playing this game,” he said on The Stephen A. Smith Show in January 2025. “She loves coming to Arrowhead [Stadium] and coming to the games and cheering for me so I’ve got all the support in the world to keep chasing these dreams.”
