Kansas City Royals versatile utility player Michael Massey is reportedly dealing with an injury at spring training, according to Anne Rogers. Rogers reports that manager Matt Quatraro said the infielder/outfielder has a low grade calf strain. Kansas City is hopeful that Massey will only have to miss around a week of action.
Teams are especially cautious in spring training, so it is not certain how serious this specific injury is. Kansas City obviously will not rush Massey back. If he needs more time to recover, then the Royals will be patient. However, Massey would surely prefer to return sooner rather than later with Opening Day only a few weeks away.

Massey, 27, offers versatility and has impacted the big league squad over the past four years. He can play second base or in the outfield.
Massey made his MLB debut in 2022. He has spent parts of the aforementioned four years in Kansas City with the MLB team, appearing in 100 or more games twice.
In 2025, Massey played in 77 games with Kansas City, hitting .244 to go along with a .581 OPS during that span. However, he hit 15 home runs in 2023 and 14 home runs in 2024. The ’24 campaign saw Massey record a career-best .743 OPS across 100 games played as well.

Massey is not considered to be a star by any means, but he’s a productive left-handed bat who can move around the field as necessary. He is a player managers love to have on rosters. Massey will likely make an impact once again in 2026, regardless of how many MLB games he ends up appearing in.
The Royals will continue to monitor and provide updates on Massey’s injury status. With that being said, they still have spring training games to play.
On Tuesday, the Royals will play the Seattle Mariners. Kansas City is set to play the Chicago Cubs and San Francisco Giants on Wednesday as part of split-squad setups. The ball club will then play the San Diego Padres on Thursday.
