Michelle Pfeiffer turned to Helen Mirren before boarding her latest series, The Madison.

The actress, 67, revealed on the Tuesday, March 10 episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert that — after only getting a “basic” level of information on the show from its creator, Taylor Sheridan — she asked someone already familiar with his work ethic for advice.

As Pfeiffer explained, Sheridan, who also created the Mirren-starring 1923, met with her ahead of writing The Madison at his Texas ranch. He gave her a general rundown of the concept “in broad strokes.” But when Pfeiffer asked for some form of script to really get a feel for it, Sheridan didn’t have one, as he typically writes around the actors he casts.

“I thought, ‘I have to find out something about this.’ So I knew that Helen Mirren was doing a show with him,” she said of 1923. “[Which] I loved. And I know she doesn’t suffer fools.”

Mirren, 80, indeed starred alongside Harrison Ford in the two-season Western from 2022 through 2025. And she had a couple pointers for Pfeiffer ahead of The Madison.

“She said, ‘The scripts are great and best production I’ve ever worked on. And I’m having a blast,’ ” Pfeiffer recalled. “So I thought, ‘Okay, well.’ “

Mirren’s feedback must’ve been enough for Pfeiffer, who boarded the show and now stars alongside  Kurt Russell, Patrick J. Adams and Matthew Fox.

fffThe series follows the story of the Clyburn family, New York City transplants living in the Madison River valley of Montana. Pfeiffer stars as the grieving Stacy Clyburn.

Pfeiffer told Entertainment Tonight at the New York City premiere of The Madison on Monday, March 9 that Sheridan wouldn’t budge on sharing a script beforehand. The actress ultimately “committed to it without even having read anything.”

“It was really just him explaining the scope of the character and kind of the outline of where it was going,” Pfeiffer said. “I said, ‘Well, I’d really love to read something.’ And he said, ‘No, I really like to cast it first and then I write.’ I said, ‘Well, I’d really like to read something and then I commit.’ “

She added, “We went back and forth over a couple of weeks like that, and then I realized I wasn’t going to to win this argument and I was either going to have to commit or give it up.”

As for Sheridan, the series creator gave a rare speech to introduce the show during its New York City premiere on Monday. He explained that “sometimes you have to leave a place to really know it and love it,” with The Madison being “a story of a family that has to leave it to learn to love it again.” The show “demanded a lot of everyone,” he added.

“I don’t make anything. I write things down and then I bring together a cast and a crew and I ask them to go make it,” Sheridan said.

The Madison premieres Saturday, March 14 on Paramount+ with three episodes. The following three will premiere on March 21.
