In some way, we’re all chasing dreams, no matter what stage of life we’re at, and as Radiator King, Adam Silvestri has been after a different type of dream over the last few years. Today marks the premiere of the music video for the latest Radiator King single, “Dream.”
A driving rock radio anthem, the song is the newest to emerge in a new era of what is now a full-fledged band. The song was heavily inspired by Silvestri’s move to Los Angeles in 2021. Intermixed with performance clips, the video features two young people chasing their dreams as far as they can go. “Dream” ponders the factors that lead people down different paths in life. There is a certain powerful humanity in the struggle of “the chase” and not giving up, which this song gives consideration to.
Discussing the video and song, Silvestri offers:
“The day before the video shoot for ‘Dream,’ I actually tore my meniscus. But we couldn’t postpone it. Alex (Burke), Brian (Viglione) and I all had insane schedules coming up, and this was basically our only window where everyone was going to be in L.A. at the same time. So I just sucked it up and tried my best to play it cool, even though on the inside I wanted to cry the entire time.
“The video was directed by our friend Declan Adams, who also did our last video for ‘The Second Coming.’ He always does an incredible job. Declan came up with the concept on his own. He brought in a few of his friends who are great actors, and we really just let him run with it. I love seeing a song you wrote come to life through someone else’s eyes—songs mean different things to different people, and collaboration lets you see how someone else interprets your vision.
“The track itself was produced by Ted Hutt in Los Angeles. We’ve worked with Ted on our last few releases and have built a really strong relationship with him. He’s been huge in helping guide this latest batch of songs in the best possible direction.”
The release of “Dream” coincides with a whole new era for Radiator King. This is a drastic new direction for a project that was for the last decade just the songwriting minker for Silvestri. As mentioned, Silvestri moved to LA a few years ago, largely at the urging of longtime collaborator Brian Vigilione, drummer of The Dresden Dolls. Rather than his usual lone wolf approach, Silvestri branched out and tried to become much more collaborative. Viglione and keyboardist Alexander Burke have now joined Silvestri as official members of Radiator King. They are a proper band with a fixed lineup where the songwriting responsibilities are shared.
The group’s songwriting is done with lots of spontaneity, with an old-school approach of just getting together in a Hollywood rehearsal space and banging songs out. Silvestri handled lead vocals and guitar, while Viglione focused on drums and backing vocals, with Burke contributing on organ, piano, and synth.
Since moving to LA, it has been a whole new life-changing experience for Silvestri. When he moved, he decided to take a much-needed break from the road, which turned out to be a very worthwhile decision. It enabled him to refocus as a songwriter and expand his horizons as a musician. The new songs that the trio has been working on feel very personal to Silvestri. It feels again like he did when he was a kid, making noise with a guitar in his parents’ house. This new approach has lent a lot of perspective and excitement to the process. It’s a new era for Radiator King and one that Silvestri hopes is the best one yet.
