Ryder began auditioning in the mid-1980s, impressing casting directors with her maturity and intelligence. Denise Di Novi, the producer of Heathers, once said, “Winona was so smart. She was fifteen, she turned sixteen on the movie. She was a prodigy… She really got the words and the imagery. She had the beauty of Veronica. She had the intelligence.
