Princess Anne appeared to crack a joke about the size of Princess Catherine‘s hat at this year’s Commonwealth Day service on Monday. The 75-year-old stepped out at the service alongside King Charles, Queen Camilla, the Prince and Princess of Wales and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester. As well as excitable spectators, the family were also faced with anti-monarchy protestors outside of Westminster Abbey. Speaking on behalf of Betfair Casino, lip reader Nicola Hickling shared what Anne said to Catherine and William.
Speaking to William, the lip reader said that William told his aunt, “Oh the hats get in the way”, to which she said: “A big hat is a kiss deterrent!”. William then sweetly told her, “I still try my best though”.
Then spotting the size of Catherine’s hat, Anne backed away and said to her: “I’m not going to even try”.
Erupting into laughter, Catherine then responded: “I know, I’ll just say hello. My hair is held…”
The 44-year-old wore a Catherine Walker dress, paired with a wide-brimmed hat by Sean Berret.
It comes after the King’s brother, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, was arrested on his 66th birthday last month on suspicion of misconduct in public office.
Commonwealth Day was celebrated around the world on March 9, 2026, with people taking part in cultural events, school activities and faith-based services across the 56 member countries.
It has annually been marked on the second Monday in March since 1977, the day brings together people from across the Commonwealth, representing nearly a third of the world’s population, in a shared moment of reflection and celebration.
