Stephen Colbert’s “Late Show” put a brutal new twist on a classic American song Wednesday to congratulate Venezuela on its victory in the World Baseball Classic and mock President Donald Trump’s response to it.
“STATEHOOD!!! President DJT,” Trump wrote on social media just seconds after the final out.
“Take me out to Caracas, baseball is our sport now, you may have taken our president, in return we’ve taken Señor Met,” the song lyrics say, referencing the U.S. capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and talking about New York Mets mascot Mr. Met.
The parody went on to reference that Venezuela likely does not want to become the 51st state, the president’s potentially deteriorating mental state, and Trump’s numerous pictures alongside convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Trump made similar references to Venezuela becoming the 51st state after the team’s victory over Italy in the semifinals on Monday.
“Wow! Venezuela defeated Italy tonight, 4-2, in the WBC (Baseball!) Semifinal. They are looking really great. Good things are happening to Venezuela lately! I wonder what this magic is all about? STATEHOOD, #51, ANYONE? President DONALD J. TRUMP,” Trump wrote on social media.
Venezuela defeated the United States 3-2 in Tuesday night’s WBC final.
