MARIETTA – The Mid-Ohio Valley Entertainment Commission brought together film enthusiasts for a film crew training event at Marietta College on Sunday. The event sought to promote creativity and inspire filmmakers in the region.

The event was originally scheduled for the entirety of the weekend but due to weather, the session was condensed to Sunday only.

MOV Film’s workshop collaborated with MOV Film board members, advisory council, and volunteers to provide participants with hands-on experience and film production preparation.

Training was a single-day session with instruction from board members on production workflow, set protocol, film crew responsibilities and more.

The session also included training on film production call sheets and reports which are used as communication tools during filming.

“This type of training is essential as we continue to build the infrastructure needed to support film production in our region,” said Erin O’Neill, director of strategy and community engagement for MOV Film. “By investing in the professional development of our leadership and volunteer network, we are laying the groundwork for a sustainable and capable local film workforce.”

MOV Film advisory council member Chris Glaser said the training session day was valuable for those looking to pursue film.

“The chance to learn from Kenny Chaplin was a fantastic opportunity and I’m looking forward to working more with the MOV Film Commission in the future to put this training into action,” said Glaser. “The possibility of working on film locally is an exciting prospect!”

Chaplin is an assistant director who worked on films like Body of Lies, Spartan and Runaway Jury.

“It was a pleasure working with the Mid-Ohio Valley Film Commission this past weekend,” said Chaplin. “The energy and enthusiasm from the students made it clear that this community is building something special.”

According to a release from MOV Film, Chaplin flew from Saskatchewan in Canada for the event.

“From mastering call sheets and production reports, to safely coordinating background action, their commitment to learning the real rhythm of a film set was inspiring,” said Chaplin. “Trainings like this is how strong local crews are built, and I’m excited to see where this growing Ohio film community goes next.”

The training session was partially funded by a grant from the Ohio Arts Council as well as support from local donations.

Washington County Career Center student Austin Richards said the experience was great.

“The guest speaker, Kenny Chaplin, was more than informative, he was entertaining,” said Richards. “I think everybody had a great time and was so happy to be learning from someone so heavily experienced.”
