Other parts of the files show that the royal sisters were also called on to entertain Epstein’s contacts and give them inside tours of Buckingham Palace. While the two princesses have not commented on any interactions they had with Epstein, who was a friend of their parents, they have faced criticism for what the files have shown, even though appearing in the files does not indicate wrongdoing.
However, a royal expert has said that Beatrice, 37, and Eugenie, 35, are not to blame.
Speaking to The Mirror, royal author Ingrid Seward, who has known Fergie for a long time, said: “We don’t know if they (Beatrice and Eugenie) knew what was going on or not, some assume that they must have done, but they may not have done.
“And if they didn’t know, they must be very unhappy with their parents at the moment. It’s all very well talking about loyalty, and they are very loyal, but they’ve been dragged into this as basically, as innocents.
“People say, ‘Oh, they must have known that they were going to have lunch with a convicted paedophile’, but why would they know? It would just have been going for lunch with ‘a friend of mum’s’.
“The blame has to lie with Sarah. We don’t know how their lives panned out, but presumably she would just say, ‘right, we’re catching a plane at 3 o’clock and we’re going to have lunch with Uncle Jeffrey’. Maybe they would question if he was in prison? Or maybe they wouldn’t even know that?”
The sisters have also kept a low profile since their father, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, was arrested last month on suspicion of misconduct in public office. He was released the same day as his arrest under investigation.
Andrew has always denied wrongdoing and accusations against him.
Beatrice and Eugenie have not commented on the matter.
Sarah Ferguson’s past friendship with Epstein does not indicate wrongdoing. Appearing in the Epstein files does also not indicate wrongdoing.
