Chappell Roan took to Instagram to give her “half of the story” on Sunday after Brazilian soccer star Jorginho accused one of Roan’s security guards of leaving his stepdaughter “extremely shaken” and “in tears” following a tense encounter.
On Saturday, Jorginho wrote on Instagram that he, his wife Catherine Harding and his 11-year-old stepdaughter were staying at a São Paulo hotel ahead of Chappell’s headlining performance at Lollapalooza Brazil when the singer, who was also apparently staying there, walked past their table at breakfast.
The soccer star wrote that the 11-year-old — who appears to be Ada Law, Harding’s daughter with her ex, actor Jude Law — is a fan of the singer’s music and “simply walked past the singer’s table” to get a glimpse of her before returning to her family.
Jorginho accused Roan’s security guard of a “completely disproportionate” response.
“[He] began speaking in an extremely aggressive manner to both my wife and my daughter, saying that she shouldn’t allow my daughter to ‘disrespect’ or ‘harass’ other people,” wrote the soccer star, adding that the guard claimed he’d file a complaint against them with the hotel.
Jorginho used his own sports stardom to argue that he understands “very well what respect and boundaries are” before adding, “I sincerely hope this serves as a moment of reflection. No one should have to go through this, especially not a child.”
Jorginho, who tagged the singer, continued, “WITHOUT YOUR FANS, YOU WOULD BE NOTHING. AND TO THE FANS, SHE DOES NOT DESERVE YOUR AFFECTION.”
Chappell, in a video shared to Instagram stories, said the security guard was not part of her team, and she didn’t see a woman or a child approaching her at the hotel.
“No one came up to me, no one bothered me,” said the singer, adding that she didn’t ask the security guard to confront the two.
She continued, “It’s unfair for security to just assume someone doesn’t have good intentions when they have no reason to believe [that] because there’s no action even taken.”
Chappell later apologized for the security guard’s treatment of Harding and her daughter, adding that it makes her “really sad” that the two felt “uncomfortable” following the encounter.
“You did not deserve that,” she stressed.
On Saturday, Harding took to Instagram to share a video of her daughter delighting over Friday’s Lollapalooza Brazil headliner Sabrina Carpenter before noting that the 11-year-old opted out of seeing Chappell on Saturday due to “how we were treated.”
Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere, in response to Jorginho’s post, wrote on X that Chappell will never perform at the city’s Todo Mundo no Rio concert series under his leadership and vowed that the 11-year-old would be the “guest of honor” in May when Shakira headlines the show.
Chappell is known to speak out on fan interactions, telling her social media followers in 2024 that she felt like some fans were harassing and stalking her amid her rise to music stardom.
She recently called out autograph hounds and a gaggle of photographers on her way to a dinner in Paris, slamming those in the crowd who were “completely disregarding all of my boundaries.”
