Charlotte Riley opens up on marriage to Tom Hardy in rare insight
Charlotte Riley details her first meeting with her husband, Hollywood hardman Tom Hardy, who offered her a “really decent cup of tea.”
The couple, who married 12 years ago, first fell for each other on the set of their 2009 TV adaptation of Wuthering Heights, where they starred as Heathcliff and Cathy.
While two actors rehearsed for the intimate scenes in the movie, Charlotte remembered that the talk about their shared northern roots with Tom started their romance.
“He made me a really decent cup of tea,” the period drama actress remembers her first impression of Tom. “Strong. There’s not much point if the spoon doesn’t stand up.”
She said that Tom told her that his mother was northern, then she thought, “all right then.”
“When somebody can give as good as they get, you know you’re in for a good time,” Riley said about her husband while speaking to The Sunday Times Style Magazine.
Charlotte also dismissed claims of Tom being a Method actor, saying he remained his usual easy-going, cheeky self on set throughout filming.
The actress also shared a glimpse into their cheeky moments from the Wuthering Heights set, when she had Tom laughing with her banter.
“We were talking about it the other day. There’s that famous line? ‘Whatever our souls are made of, yours and mine are the same,’ she told.
Reflecting on them falling in love between laughing, the actress said, “We shot it in a tiny church on the moors and it was beautiful. We were sitting in a pew and I had to turn to Tom and say my line. And he absolutely died laughing.”
