Tom Cruise’s on-set discipline wins praise from Steven Spielberg
Tom Cruise has earned high praise from Steven Spielberg, who recently reflected on working with the actor.
During a conversation with Sean Fennessey at a keynote event at SXSW in Austin, Texas, the 79-year-old director praised the 63-year-old actor’s discipline while working together on Minority Report (2002) and War of the Worlds (2005).
“Tom Cruise showed up every morning when I showed up. I show up before the crew. So I get to the set sometimes at 6.30 in the morning,” Spielberg said.
He contined, “On Minority Report and on War of the Worlds, Tom would insist on getting there when I got there so we would map out the whole day… which was really helpful for me.”
Cruise, known for performing his own stunts, has also highlighted his approach to developing skills for his roles.
“I will learn a skill, and I know eventually I’m going to use it in a movie,” he said in a May 2025 interview with PEOPLE, explaining that he was “constantly training” across a range of skills, “whether it’s the piano or having more time to dance. Or parachuting, flying airplanes, or helicopters.”
“The wonderful thing is you’re never there. It can always be better,” the Mission Impossible star added.
Tom Cruise’s upcoming film
As for his upcoming projects, Cruise will next be seen in Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s film Digger, which is scheduled to be released in theatres on October 2, 2026.
