No one is safe from Hollywood’s ongoing dedication to rebooting classic and beloved IP — not even the beloved early aughts rom-com 13 Going on 30.
Netflix revealed today that the film’s original star Jennifer Garner is on board to executive produce an upcoming reboot of the film. People We Meet on Vacation breakout Emily Bader and Oh, Hi! star Logan Lerman are set to star as the two romantic leads. The film will reunite Bader with her People We Meet director Brett Haley, which was one of Netflix’s strongest performing releases so far this year. Hannah Marks (Mark, Mary, & Some Other People) is on board to pen the script.
The original Garner-starring 2004 film is one of the most adored romantic comedies from the early 2000s. It starred Garner as Jenna Rink, a 13-year-old girl who one day wakes up as the 30-year-old version of herself and aims to navigate adulthood while having no idea what’s in store for her—personally and professionally. Her love interest, Matt Flamhaff, was portrayed by a charming Mark Ruffalo.
“13 Going on 30 is one of those rare, perfect films,” Brett Haley shared in a statement regarding the reboot, per Deadline. “Funny, emotional, deeply human, with unforgettable performances from Jennifer Garner, Mark Ruffalo, and Judy Greer. I’m a longtime fan, so stepping into this reimagining comes with tremendous responsibility.”
He continued, “Jennifer Garner being on board as an executive producer, after playing such a big part of what made the original special, is especially meaningful. I also couldn’t be more excited to reunite with Emily Bader after People We Meet on Vacation. She and the amazingly talented Logan Lerman are a magical pairing. I feel incredibly lucky to be trusted with something that means so much to so many people.”
