I was at the supermarket last night, singing along to the music playing throughout the store, and yes, maybe doing a little dancing in the aisles too.

The playlist was so good that even someone next to me pointed it out.

The music absolutely made my shopping experience more fun, and distracted me from the increasing prices, at least until I got to the checkout, where I was quickly reminded.

When I got home, I looked into how much feel-good music playing in stores can really influence how much people spend.

A recent article in Reader’s Digest explains that happy, upbeat music can make us get completely lost in the shopping experience, and according to a study from the University of Bath School of Management, we can end up spending about 10% more.

And it’s not just supermarkets, but other stores too, with about 80% of those polled saying they enjoy the music being played in stores, and 40% admitted they’ll stay in a store longer when a good song comes on.

Another key takeaway from the report is that 77% of customers are more likely to wait in line if an engaging song is playing.

Now every time I’m at the supermarket, I’ll probably be thinking about the music and how much extra money I might be spending because of it!
