‘The Masked Singer’ Season 14 Semifinals Live Recap: Who Was Unmasked?

With only two episodes left to this season, The Masked Singer was back for its penultimate episode on Wednesday, March 25, bringing together the final five mystery singers as the panel of detectives-Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg, Ken Jeong and Rita Ora-attempted to decipher which celebrities were hiding beneath those intricate masks.

Last week’s shocking double unmasking

Week 10 proved to be an interesting one for the detectives, as five of the titular masked singers-14 Karat Carrot, Cat Witch, Sting Ray and Galaxy Girl-took to the stage to try and secure their spot in the semifinals. The episode was themed after Star Trek, with each song chosen boasting fun, space-related lyrics and the detectives in full costume.

After all the performances finished, the detectives and audience voted to save their two favorites, who were revealed to be Cat Witch and Galaxy Girl. Given that two singers had to be eliminated, there was no “Royale” round this episode, making 14 Karat Carrot and Stingray the celebs set to be unmasked.

First was the aforementioned vegetable-themed contestant, whom the detectives were torn on as far as identity. While Ora thought they were Craig Robinson, Jeong guessed Steve Harvey. Upon their unmasking, 14 Karat Carrot was revealed to be TV personality Judge Greg Mathis, whom Thicke correctly guessed, making him the “Detective of the Week.”

Next up was Stingray, and-despite some initial disagreements with their guesses-all four detectives came together in their final guess, believing the masked singer to be musician Evan Ross. They were promptly revealed to be correct, and Ross closed the show with a rendition of “Starboy” by The Weeknd.

With the double elimination, the two celebs joined David “Big Papa” Ortiz, The Chrisleys, Tiffany Haddish, Tone Loc, Taraji P. Henson, Claudia Oshry, Teddi Mellencamp, Billy Ray Cyrus, Jack Wagner and Alexi Lalas as the Season 14 singers unmasked thus far.

This week’s theme

There is no theme this week, as the detectives will need all of their attention focused on the final clues as they narrow down the field for next week’s grand finale.

As noted above, tonight the final five mystery singers will take to the stage, including Galaxy Girl, Pangolin, Pugcasso, Crane and Cat Witch-the latter of whom we already know the identity of (Kylie Cantrall) as part of a new challenge for the detectives this season.

Galaxy Girl

The intergalactic-themed masked singer was up first, performing a high-energy rendition of “Misery Business” by Paramore. Their main clue revealed that they’re friends with a “massive star,” and that they used to watch them play huge stages before they became an artist themselves. They also noted that, while the two are still close, they’re also competitive, which is why Galaxy Girl was aiming to win the competition.

The detectives loved the performance, saying Galaxy Girl clearly “came to win.” Host Nick Cannon also revealed that each remaining masked singer also had a special connection to each detective, with Galaxy Girl sharing that they actually had a connection to Cannon. Both McCarthy Wahlberg and Ora believed they could be Ashlee Simpson, but Thicke thought they were Ali Michalka of Ali & AJ fame.

Pangolin

Pangolin was up next, singing “ItMust’veBeen Love” by Roxette. They opened up in their clue-related footage about their special connection with their grandmother, and how her loss affected their career. In the process, they also revealed they had an Emmy Award, which their grandmother used to brag about.

Following their performance, Pangolin stated that they had shared a screen with Jeong once before. Jeong guessed several titles, but the masked singer confirmed they didn’t star in KPop Demon Hunters or Crazy Rich Asians. Jeong guessed Lea Michele based on their vocal range, while McCarthy Wahlberg thought they might be Rachel Platten.

Crane

“Break Free” by Ariana Grande was the song of choice for the bird-themed masked singer. During their clue-related footage, they shared that their initial debut resulted in “multi-platinum” levels of success. However, while things appeared great to the public at the time, behind closed doors, they were struggling, as their parents were “sick.” Now, the whole family’s doing well, with Crane stating that being a fighter is “in [their] blood.”

Following their song, Crane revealed their connection was to Ora, joking that the two of them love a bit of “healthy competition.” The detective confirmed with the mystery celeb that they once “competed” against each other, and Ora was torn between Halle Bailey and Normani. On the other hand, Jeong believed they might be SZA based on their dance skills.

Pugcasso

Pugcasso took on “Bad Dreams” by Teddy Swims for their performance. Their clues revealed that they always thought of themselves as “a musician, not a celebrity,” joking that even their kid doesn’t know they’re “famous.” They also specified that they wanted to be on the show because it allowed them to show off “what they did best.”

Once the masked celeb took their bow, Jeong said that Pugcasso was his favorite to “win it all.” McCarthy Wahlberg was the pup-themed performer’s connection to the detectives, saying that they once “shared a stage” together. McCarthy Wahlberg had multiple guesses, including Michael Bubl and John Legend, but Ora was confident they were Darren Criss.

Cat Witch

The feline-themed masked singer closed the show with their version of “Run to You” by Whitney Houston. As noted above, the audience at home already knows that Cat Witch is Cantrall, with the show switching it up this season by revealing the identity of one contestant to viewers ahead of time, but not the detectives.

Ora was moved by the performance, calling it a “game changer.” Cat Witch’s connection was to Thicke, saying he’d “welcomed [their] family” into his home, adding that they also had a connection to Ora. Thicke believed they were Noah Cyrus based on the family ties; however, Ora guessed correctly-without realizing it-making the connection to Descendants, where Ora played Cantrall’s mother.

Who was eliminated?

After the five finalists wrapped up their performances, the detectives and audience were prompted to vote for their favorites. Once all the votes were counted, the masked singer eliminated was Pangolin, securing spots in the finale for Cat Witch, Pugcasso, Crane and Galaxy Girl.

Upon their unmasking, the mystery celeb was revealed to be Rachel Platten, making McCarthy Wahlberg the only detective to guess their identity correctly throughout the season.
