New single

Local band Redwood Revolution has released a new single, “The Tyrant King,” featuring Holly Murphy.

The song was written in memory of Alex Pretti and Renee Good by Beth Isbell (lyrics, music) and Holly Murphy (music). Murphy plays piano and sings in this new song. Isbell plays guitar and sings backing vocals. Ray Triana plays lead guitar, Josh Borgen plays bass and Spencer Kennedy plays drums.

To hear the song, go to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OPzqiEgx90. It will be released nationally through the band’s new record label, Shamus Records.

Original play

Creekside Arts and EXIT Theatre will present “Ali, Cosell, My Dad & Me,” an original play by Michael Bickford, directed by John Heckel and starring Larry Crist, from April 17 to 26 at EXIT Theatre, 890 G St., second floor, Arcata.

Performances are at 7 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays. Tickets are $15 to $25 at https://ali-cosell-my-dad-and-me.eventbrite.com or via cash at the door (leave reservation at [email protected]).

In “Ali, Cosell, My Dad & Me” a man shares his personal transformative journey. Activating his memory through a much younger version of himself, he sets off to discover the true nature of his racist and abusive father and co-dependent mother. His discoveries on that journey shed unexpected insights on today’s polarized America.
Bickford was born in Los Angeles and has been living in Arcata since 1990 and writing with the Lost Coast Writers Community since co-founding it in the late 1990s. He performed the 10-minute version of “Ali, Cosell, My Dad & Me” for EXIT Theatre’s Short Play Festival in 2023.

Heckel is a retired professor of theater and film at Cal Poly Humboldt. He has directed both film and theater, including recently “The American Dream” and “Zoo Story” by Edward Albee at EXIT Theatre.

Crist has been acting for 60 years and has appeared in over 100 shows. He has appeared in numerous shows at EXIT Theatre and other Humboldt County theaters, and in Seattle during his 25 years living there. He lives in Trinidad where he looks after his 93-year-old mother, retired HSU drama professor Jenny Cranston.

First ‘Stampede’

he Humboldt County Fairgrounds will come alive with country music May 30 and 31 with the launch of the first “Stampede,” a two-day country concert, camping, beer and wine festival put on by the Humboldt County Fair Association. Hours are noon to 10 p.m. May 30 and noon to 8 p.m. May 31.

The event will showcase rising country artists from across the United States alongside award-winning beer and wine at the historic fairgrounds in Ferndale.

With a long list of past memorable concerts, including the Fernstock festival and performances by country legends such as Tim McGraw and Willie Nelson, “Stampede” aims to revive tradition and bring live music back to the fairgrounds during its non-fair season.

This is an all-ages community event. Pre-sale tickets start at $30 for one day, and two-day general admission is $45. A limited number of VIP tickets will also be offered, providing premium viewing areas. To purchase tickets, go to https://www.humboldtcountyfair.org/stampede.
