Jet Li is starring in two upcoming wuxia microdramas produced in China.
The China-born action star, who has been Singaporean since 2009 and is turning 63 in end April, attended an event by microdrama hosting company Hongguo on March 31.
“I think the size of the stage is not important, whether it’s a blockbuster movie, web drama, television drama or microdrama. This is a good platform because it allows more people to fulfil their dreams,” he said.
He also announced two microdramas he has acted in, namely Yuan Li Jiang Hu and Jian Gui.
Yuan Li Jiang Hu, which is expected to be released in April, centres on massage therapist Chen Ye (Du Yafei), who unexpectedly gains supernatural powers one day. Using his newfound powers, he teams up with heiress Yin Qingli (Sun Linya) to expose the conspiracy behind a dubious martial arts organisation.
Jet plays a character named Feng Zi, who provides Chen Ye with martial arts training and spiritual guidance.
During the lensing ceremony on Jan 31, he said in a video uploaded on Weibo that it has always been his dream to act in a kungfu microdrama which the younger generation would understand, saying it’s a good way to share culture.
He told the actors at the lensing ceremony: “For those of you who have acted in microdramas before, you are my seniors. If it’s your first time acting in a microdrama, then we will all learn together.”
Jian Gui tells the story of powerful Wudang sect swordmaster Chen Sanqi (Du Jiangsan) who fled when his sect was attacked by their enemy Black Wing clan and lives in seclusion in Qingshi town. When the clan returns to attack the town 20 years later, Sanqi teams up with the villagers to restore peace across the land.
Information regarding the character that Jet plays has not been revealed. The drama is also expected to be broadcast in April.
He said during the lensing ceremony on March 15 that he feels a sense of responsibility to spread knowledge and culture about kungfu to viewers worldwide.
