Queen Elizabeth refused to speak to Prince Harry on the phone without a lady-in-waiting present, following the Duke and Duchess’ history of tell-all interviews and bombshell memoirs.
The late Queen grew weary of sharing personal information with her estranged grandson after the couple’s tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey and the release of Harry’s memoir, ‘Spare’.
In Queen Elizabeth II: A Personal History, Hugo Vickers writes that whenever Prince Harry called his grandmother, she asked her lady-in-waiting to stay with her.
“The Queen clearly wanted some moral support and protection … to ensure there was a record of what was said,” he wrote.
“I think the Queen was also on her guard with Harry because she was so hurt by what he had done.
“The distress the Sussexes caused the Queen in the last years of her life cannot be overestimated,” he added.
In another bombshell claim from Vickers’s new book, the late monarch reportedly refused to meet the couple alone during the 2022 Platinum Jubilee celebrations, where she was due to meet their daughter, Princess Lilibet.
“Prince Harry was at (his then-residence) Frogmore Cottage with his wife and two children, the gate adorned with balloons to celebrate baby Lilibet’s first birthday,” he wrote.
“They visited the Queen with the children, again with a lady-in-waiting present,” Vickers said.
During their interview with Oprah, the couple made a series of explosive claims, including that a royal raised concerns about their son Archie’s skin colour and “what it might mean”.
Meghan also added that the institution refused to support her during major mental health struggles.
“I went to the institution and I said that I needed to go somewhere to get help … And I was told that I couldn’t, that it wouldn’t be good for the institution,” Meghan told Oprah.
“I remember this conversation like it was yesterday, because they said: my heart goes out to you because I see how bad it is, but there’s nothing we can do to protect you because you’re not a paid employee of the institution.”
In Spare, published in 2023, Harry said the institution was “briefing the press on the sly” and “planting stories” for decades.
“I told them that I failed to see how speaking to Oprah was any different from what my family and their staff had done for decades,” he wrote.
“The only difference was that Meg and I were upfront about it,” Harry wrote.
“We chose an interviewer who was above reproach, and we didn’t once hide behind phrases like “Palace sources”, we let people see the words coming out of our mouths.”
He also described a shock physical altercation with his brother William that he said left him on the floor.
“He set down the water, called me another name, then came at me. It all happened so fast. So very fast. He grabbed me by the collar, ripping my necklace, and he knocked me to the floor,” he wrote.
“I landed on the dog’s bowl, which cracked under my back, the pieces cutting into me. I lay there for a moment, dazed, then got to my feet and told him to get out.”
