Royal family members all smiles as they attend Peter Phillips’ wedding amid Prince Harry snub

After ending their series against the Minnesota Twins off on a poor note on Thursday afternoon, as their offense reverted to their underwhelming form, their bullpen continued to struggle and they got a bit of an unwanted distraction following Carter Jensen’s oversleeping saga, they Kansas City Royals have no time to mope.

They get right back into things with a weekend inter-league home series versus the Milwaukee Brewers.

Ahead of Friday’s opener, the Royals made a roster move to address their starting pitching situation, calling current Top 10 prospect according to MLB Pipeline Luinder Avila up from Triple-A Omaha to account for the struggling Bailey Falter’s placement on the injured list.

The move itself seems like a routine roster transaction, however there’s so much more to it that makes it particularly intriguing.

Not only is Avila a top prospect in this Royals system and coming off a bullpen cameo in 2025 that was simply sensational, but he has something that most other names in the major leagues can’t say they have right now…a promising showing the World Baseball Classic.

Luinder Avila’s World Baseball Classic performance is exactly the boost this Royals pitching staff needs

The Royals starting staff has been a highlight to their 3-3 campaign so far, with Cole Ragans’ Opening Day outing being the only real dark spot on their record to this point.

However, there’s been plenty of underwhelming outings in the bullpen to cast a grey cloud over this pitching staff as a whole.

Given how many blowups this team has endured from the top of the ‘pen to the backend, they could use another reliable innings eater to come in and alleviate some of that pressure.

This is where Avila could come into the fold and make a real difference, particularly the Avila that dazzled with WBC champions Venezuela last month.

His shutdown outing against Italy in particular – where he threw 2.1 shutout innings surrendering just two hits – was a big reason as to why he carried a perfect 0.00 ERA while showcasing a devastating pitch-mix.

Now, Avila’s form as a starter in the minor leagues hasn’t been ideal, with the success coming out of the ‘pen, but his stuff doesn’t lie, he has the makings of a front-end starter in the eyes of many, including manager Matt Quatraro.

He now has the chance to begin to prove that he belongs as a big league starter and for the Royals sake, performances like his standout ones in the WBC would go a long way to stabilizing this pitching group in the early going.
