Influencer Abby Howard is opening up about waiting until marriage to have sex — and sharing some advice for newlyweds.
The podcaster, who’s currently expecting a baby with husband Matt Howard, spoke on the Friday, April 3, episode of her Always Here podcast about her wedding night and what her experience with abstinence was like.
“I feel like there is so much messaging that is so negative toward waiting ’til the night, like, ‘It’s going to be so awkward, it’s going to be so embarrassing and it’s gonna be terrible and it’s not going to work,'” Howard, 27, said. “I just think that’s not true, at least in our experience.”
The couple wed in 2019, when they were 20 and 21, respectively. According to Abby, their experience of waiting until their wedding night was “very, very wholesome and sweet and beautiful.”
“I think, at this point, there’s certainly excitement about something new, but it’s not like you’re going to be necessarily nervous ’cause you are with your person,” she told her co-host and sister-in-law, Abigail Howard.
“There’s so much comfort toward that, rather than a random one-off. There’s just so much history [and] so much relationship, you know they’re not looking for anything other than to connect with you,” she said.

“We did wait until the day of the wedding and it was beautifully intimate, special [and] wholesome,” she continued. “Never once awkward. …I’m not saying that it’s going to be the most romantic, crazy night of your life — but in a way it will — [but it] doesn’t look like the movies because it’s so intimate and special.”

Matt and Abby first met at a theater camp when they were in eighth grade. They tied the knot in 2019 when they were both sophomores at Missouri State University.
The couple have been candid about their relationship over the years and their lives as parents — especially after Abby announced that her fourth pregnancy, just months after sharing that she had experienced pregnancy loss.
“baby #4 🌈. grateful beyond measure,” they captioned an Instagram post in March, which featured a pic of them sharing a kiss and holding up a set of sonogram photos. The pair are also parents to sons Griffin, 3, and August, 2.
The pregnancy news comes six months after they said Abby experienced pregnancy loss at 17 weeks with a baby girl in a Sept. 27 Instagram post. They were at a “routine pregnancy appointment” when the doctor was unable to find a heartbeat, the couple said. They later found out their baby, whom they named Emerson Nicole, had a “genetic condition that took her life.”
“The news felt unimaginable,” the couple wrote alongside a photo of them holding hands. “The grief is absolutely devastating. But we feel so much gratitude for the time that we did get to have with her. And we still have hope. Hope has continued to show up for us in so many ways.”
