NEED TO KNOW

Key Takeaways

  • Afrojack and Elettra Lamborghini prioritize time together with a rule of no more than eight days apart

  • The couple enjoys low-key activities like puzzles and Disney park visits despite their high-profile careers and fame

  • Lamborghini, granddaughter of the Lamborghini founder, hosts Italy’s Undercover Boss, while Afrojack will tour North America this fall

On social media, DJ Afrojack and his singer and TV star wife, Elettra Lamborghini, appear to enjoy the ultimate in high-flying luxury: private jets, five-star hotels and endless travel; fast cars TV fame and, for both of them, regular live sets where they perform in front of massive crowds of tens of thousands.

But for the power duo, true happiness comes only when they’re home together, watching TV and doing puzzles. Yes, jigsaws.

“We figured out last month that we love puzzles,” the Dutch music producer Afrojack (known for club hits like 2014’s “Hey Mama” with David Guetta, Nicki Minaj and Bebe Rexha) says from their home in Miami, where they stay when they’re not in Milan or Antwerp, Belgium. “We did two of them this week!”

Lamborghini — a pop star in her native Italy, TV personality and socialite from, yes, that Lamborghini -family — agrees that home is their happy place: “We love our jobs, but when we have free time, we just love doing nothing — order food in, watch a movie and recharge.”

“I just like to be normal,” Lamborghini adds.

But their lives are, of course, far from average.

The Grammy-winning DJ, 38, born Nick van de Wall to his Dutch mother and Surinamese father, was playing in clubs and pubs in Holland at 14. By 2013 he was the seventh-highest-paid DJ in the world. Now he headlines electronic music festivals around the world and will be on his North American Control tour from Oct. 2 through Nov. 28.

Lamborghini, 32, whose grandfather is the car company founder Ferruccio Lamborghini, first gained
fame appearing on reality shows including The Voice of Italy as a coach and is currently host of Italy’s Undercover Boss.

The couple say they can’t walk around in Europe without being swarmed by fans and paparazzi.

“Everyone screams her name and grabs their phones for photos and selfies,” Afrojack says of his wife. Even their dog, an Italian greyhound named Lea, is a superstar overseas. “We can’t go out much there,” Lamborghini—who sometimes worries someone will snag their pup—says of Europe. “It’s too stressful.”

That’s why they find harmony by pressing pause on the noise and their busy careers. The pair will celebrate the sixth anniversary of their Lake Como wedding this fall, and they’re still in the honeymoon phase.

They first met in 2018 when a manager arranged for them to work on a song together. “I fell in love with her,” says Afrojack, “and I convinced her to also fall in love with me that same day. From that moment we’ve been inseparable.”

For the most part. Each has a breakneck -schedule — “Last year I took 220 flights,” Afrojack says — but time together is a priority.

“We have a rule of no more than eight days apart,” Lamborghini says of how they keep their union strong.

Afrojack adds, “It used to be 12, but that doesn’t work for us anymore. We FaceTime every single night before bed and two to three times a day. I get so sad if I don’t talk to her before bed.” Lamborghini says their text threads are basically just endless heart emojis that they send back and forth. “We’re cheesy!” she admits, laughing.

Adds Afrojack: “By prioritizing each other above our work, everything falls into place automatically.”
