The King flew to Ottawa for less than 24 hours last May for the state opening of parliament, telling Canadians their country was “strong and free” following Mr Trump’s threats.
The mission, which saw him receive a standing ovation, was widely considered a success as the US president reduced his rhetoric about an American invasion of the Commonwealth country.
In the interview, Mr Trump called the King a “fantastic guy”, praising him in particular for living with cancer.
“He’s a great guy and he’s grown so much in the last 10 years and especially over the last couple of years as King. His fight has shown that,” he said.
Mr Trump said he had unsuccessfully questioned the late Queen about her favourite presidents and prime ministers.
“So I realised: that’s why she lasted 70 years without a complaint – because she was so good at it,” he said. “The rest of us would have said, ‘Oh, I liked so-and-so’, but she was so clever. And I know she liked me because we talked a lot.”
