Buckingham Palace shared via an official statement that the King and Queen will be visiting the US later this month. The statement, which was released on March 31, shared that the visit will take place following advice from the UK Government.
The statement was released after calls for the visit to be cancelled, even prior to confirmation that the trip would actually be taking place. It read: “On advice of His Majesty’s Government, and at the invitation of The President of the United States, The King and Queen will undertake a State Visit to the United States of America. Their Majesties’ programme will celebrate the historic connections and the modern bilateral relationship between the United Kingdom and the United States, marking the 250th anniversary of American Independence.
“The King will then continue to Bermuda to undertake His Majesty’s first Royal Visit as Monarch to a British Overseas Territory.”
Speaking about the first six words of the statement, “On advice of His Majesty’s Government”, Palace Confidential’s host Jo Elvin questioned whether the choice of words reveal exactly how the King Charles may feel about US President Donald Trump and the upcoming visit.
The Daily Mail’s senior editor Richard Kay said: “Well, on the surface, they’re just going through the formality and because of every visit that the king makes is on the advice of his government, His Majesty’s government.
“But what was unusual in this instance, and I think this is why it’s been picked up, is that although the palace always use that phrasiology in official statements, they don’t tend to put it on their social media channels…”
He then added: “And I think people are wondering what are we meant to interpret from that? Are we trying to say the palace trying to say look the King is only going because the government have instructed him to? Or they just tidying it up because this is what they put out on their official statements? It’s an interesting point, but I don’t think we should read too much into it. The king does everything at the instruction of his government. That’s why he’s going to the United States.”
Ms Elvin then added: “There has however already been some quite robust debate amongst people. Some think he should go, some think he shouldn’t. What What do you What do you think?”
Mr Kay replied: “Well, I think he should go personally.”
Taking to X, fans urged for the trip to be cancelled: “You cannot allow the King to visit the USA. It cannot go ahead. It cannot.”
Another added: “Huge mistake for King Charles to make a state visit to USA at this point…”
