Meghan Trainor is keeping it real about having a baby via surrogate.
The 32-year-old pop star welcomed her baby girl, Mikey Moon, in January via surrogate after previously carrying sons Riley, 5, and Barry, 2, herself. In a Thursday, April 9, interview on Kylie Kelce‘s Not Gonna Lie podcast, Trainor got candid about her internal struggle to have a child via surrogate for health reasons.
“[We had] heartbreaking, big decision making to do,” she said of herself and husband Daryl Sabara. “And I was struggling with my health and almost towards an autoimmune disease. So there’s so many conversations back and forth. Then we were like, the safest way is to do it through a surrogate.”
The “Get in Girl” singer said that not carrying the baby herself was difficult for her.
“Every day when we knew she was like alive in someone else, we were like, ‘Is she okay?’ ” Trainor shared. “You know, like you go cuckoo, you go crazy. There’s so much that goes into it, but we had an amazing surrogate who was so good to us and texts us everything and we got to talk all the time.”

But dealing with the difficulties of handing over control to a surrogate wasn’t the only fear Trainor had with welcoming her third child. Additionally, she was well aware of the online criticism she’d receive.
“I didn’t look [at the comments]. I knew fully — because it was after all the hate I was already getting for changing, just for looking different because I took care of myself — so I was like, ‘Oh, they hate me now. They ain’t going like this,’ ” Trainor said. “And it was a cloud of tears every night of just worry.”

The Grammy winner added, “I want my daughter to come to this world and not everyone attack her for the way she got here. All of that went through my head. But my team was with me, my therapist was with me, everyone was so supportive. My husband was like, Everyone can suck our ass. And like, this was the healthiest way.”
Ultimately, Trainor said of the decision: “We cried a lot, but it was the best thing for our family.”

After having two C-sections herself, she added that not having to physically recover from birth allowed her to be more present.
“I’ll tell you what’s different is not healing from a C-section with a newborn,” she said. “That was different. I could be so present with her and with my other kids, they’re not like, don’t I have to be worried that they’re jumping on me or I can pick them up and be fully present. So that was the good parts, but there’s a lot of scary parts.”
Trainor added that she intentionally chose to post the news online, as she was worried about her daughter’s birth leaking.
“Because they warned me it could leak through the hospital. So we were like, We’re gonna post and just announce her like we did my other kids,” Trainor said.
