Tennis sensation Coco Gauff is serving a powerful message to social media critics who recently targeted her appearance. Following a promotional post for high-fashion brand Miu Miu featuring the new Vivant bag, the 22-year-old athlete faced a wave of negative comments regarding her natural 4C hair and lack of heavy makeup.

Taking to social media to address the discourse, Gauff clarified the creative direction behind the shoot, which took place in her parents’ backyard. She explained that the collaboration was intended to showcase the bag’s versatility in everyday scenarios, such as carrying tennis balls or crochet supplies. Despite the backlash, Gauff remained firm in her decision to present herself authentically.

“I did my everyday hair and makeup because that was personally the point,” Gauff said. She emphasized that she avoids sleek, “slicked-back” hairstyles to prevent damage, choosing instead to let her hair exist in its natural state. “My 4C hair is good enough for a high-fashion brand like Miu Miu to promote one of their newest launches. So if my hair is good enough for that, then yours is good enough to do whatever you need it to do.”

The world-class athlete also addressed the criticism regarding her minimal makeup, noting that the aesthetic aligns with the brand’s often understated look. While Gauff admitted that the negative comments took a temporary toll on her confidence, she used the moment to advocate for self-acceptance among young Black girls.

Encouraging her followers to embrace whatever style makes them feel best—whether that involves wigs, weaves, full makeup, or a natural look—Gauff noted that the negativity from others often stems from their own insecurities.

“Minimal is beautiful. Full beat is beautiful. Anything in between is beautiful,” Gauff said. “Do what you want to do because people are going to hate on you regardless.”
