Jonah Hill and Martin Scorsese are recounting what it was like to film the 2013 movie, The Wolf of Wall Street

Jonah Hill and Martin Scorsese are revisiting their 2013 film, The Wolf of Wall Street — including one particularly chaotic day filming inside Jordan Belfort’s former home.
In a new conversation with Interview magazine, the two discussed the Oscar-nominated movie, which was adapted from Belfort’s 2007 memoir of the same name, in which he details his own experience as a scamming Wall Street stockbroker. Charting his meteoric rise and ultimate fall, which led to Belfort (played by Leonardo DiCaprio in the film) serving 22 months in prison, the book provides a first-hand account of the greed and consequential moral implications of America’s financial sector.
Noting that they filmed in “millions of crazy places” while making the film, Hill, 42, said Scorsese, 83, “showed me how much a movie can change through making it.”

The two then went on to discuss how The Wolf of Wall Street was anything but conventional in terms of filmmaking, with Hill recalling one particularly intense scene in which Jon Bernthal’s character hits him.
“I don’t believe I told Jon Bernthal to hit you, did I?” Scorsese asked.
“I said it was okay,” Hill responded. “It wasn’t against my consent. You didn’t tell him to hit me in a mean, f——-up way. We were discussing it—you, me, Leo, and Jon.”
The unpredictable nature of filming also affected the shooting locations, which included Belfort’s former home.
“And then we had to get out because the man who owned the house was really getting mad at us,” Scorsese remembered.
Hill added: “For context, the guy who owned Jordan Belfort’s house was desperate to get us out. He goes, ‘Guys, I’ve got to get back in my f—ing office. Ten minutes ago you said you’d be out of here.’ Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese are shooting a scene in your office. A woman has money taped to her breasts. What do you have to do that’s cooler than this?”

Scorsese then recalled the logistical challenge of wrapping the scene under the pressure from the homeowner: “And I’m saying, ‘How the hell do you want me to get her out of here? She’s got money taped all over her.’ “
“This guy’s pointing at his watch like, ‘Get the f— out of here, Marty,’ ” Hill remembered. “And listen, did the guy lose 45 minutes of valuable whatever-the-f—-he-does time? Yes.”
Hill was ultimately nominated for an Academy Award for best supporting actor for his role as Donnie Azoff in the film— his second Oscar nomination, following his role in 2011’s Moneyball. Scorsese has been nominated for ten best director nominations and one win, for The Departed in 2006.
