Nearly a decade after his death, the legacy of Gregg Allman lives on, great as ever. Two significant additions to that legacy arrive together: a new live album from the height of the Gregg Allman Band‘s touring years, and a feature documentary charting the iconic musician’s complicated path through American music history.
Out now via Sawrite Records (Allman’s posthumous label), Great As Ever: Live In Philadelphia ’86 documents a sold-out performance at Philadelphia’s Chestnut Cabaret from January 11th, 1986. By that point, the Gregg Allman Band—featuring Allman on vocals, Hammond B-3, and acoustic guitar; brothers Dan Toler on lead guitar and Frankie Toler on drums; Bruce Waibel on bass; Tim Heding on keyboards; and Chaz Trippy on percussion—had been touring for four years, earning the confidence of a seasoned touring unit.
The 13-song setlist drew heavily from the Allman Brothers Band songbook while also previewing the future: an early rendition of “I’m No Angel” makes an appearance, two years before that song would top the charts and anchor Allman’s celebrated 1987 comeback album of the same name. Other highlights include a soulful run through “It’s Not My Cross to Bear”, a tender reading of “Melissa”, which Allman dedicated to his then-estranged ABB bandmate Dickey Betts, and a performance of “Queen of Hearts” from his 1973 solo debut Laid Back.

The new album arrives with news that Gregg Allman: The Music of My Soul will hit theaters across North America this summer. Drawing on previously unreleased interviews and rarely seen live concert footage, the highly anticipated documentary from award-winning director James Keach offers an unflinching look at Allman’s life, including the loss of his brother and bandmate Duane and his struggle with addiction.
