Justin Bieber is catching heat after his Coachella headlining set left fans more puzzled than impressed.
The 32-year-old pop star took the stage Saturday, April 11, in a laid-back hoodie and shorts, opting for an approach that didn’t quite match the massive expectations surrounding his return.
Instead of a set packed with some of his biggest hits, Bieber played a few songs from his 2025 album Swag II before switching to some of his classics.
“Tonight is such a special night,” the “Sorry” singer said while sitting himself on a stool behind a table and opening up a laptop. “I feel like we gotta take you guys on a bit of a journey. Do you guys remember this song?”
He then played the hit song “Baby” on YouTube as the crowd erupted into cheers and sang along.
Bieber also filled the screen behind him with viral clips, mixing memes with moments from his own past, including his 2025 clash with paparazzi when he said, “It’s not clocking to you that I’m standing on business.”
The “Daisies” artist was quickly hit with backlash from online critics who thought the performance seemed lazy, considering he was reportedly paid $10 million for his time, according to Rolling Stone.

“Justin Bieber being the most paid artist by Coachella and he offered a performance with literally no work, no budget and some people are praising him,” one person wrote via X. “Male mediocrity privilege is real.”
Another person added, “What the hell is justin bieber doing bro you’re telling me he was the highest paid to do this bulls**t?”
One person showed a clip of a crowd of people exiting while Bieber was still singing and wrote, “Not everyone leaving during Justin Bieber’s performance because he’s unprepared and playing unknown songs from his album.”
The performance came after Bieber reportedly struck a direct deal with Coachella promoter Goldenvoice following his split from longtime manager Scooter Braun.
While Bieber has made surprise appearances at the festival in the past alongside stars like Ariana Grande and Chance the Rapper, this marked his first time headlining.
