KATSEYE recruit The Substance actress Demi Moore for a slick music video, though the song itself sounds generic.
KATSEYE has a varied catalogue, but it isn’t always a straight pass for the group. Though enjoyable, their latest release, “Animal“, co-written by Ed Sheeran, taps into the contrast between our public and private lives, with the music video premiering on MTV Live, MTVU, and Paramount Times Square Billboards.
Review: A Cookie-Cutter Pop Anthem
Though the song is enjoyable, it falls flat on many levels, one being its sonically formulaic identity and the generic hook you’ve likely heard a million times before. However, they’ve sidestepped the forgettable trend of creating music exclusively for TikTok, which is a plus, though it’s layered with a uniformity that makes it sound like an off-the-shelf, over-polished product.
Produced by Omer Fedi and Blake Slatkin, the track is acceptable but is the weakest of their efforts. The most exciting thing about “Animal” is the artwork and music video, which features actress Demi Moore. Thanks to Cody Critcheloe’s direction, the visuals separate the group from the typical girl-band aesthetic with a sliver of artistry, though it’s still not enough to lift it into memorable territory.
Honestly, there doesn’t seem to be anything that splits the band apart from their contemporaries. Though there’s a lot of talent in the tank, ironically, they are “cookie-cutter”, and the best of what they can achieve will likely come from solo projects. The takeaway is that it’s a good track, but we probably won’t remember it in a few years.
Release Details
The track is taken from their upcoming EP WILD, due for release on August 14 2026 via HYBE x GEFFEN. It’s available for pre-save now, and includes the lead single “PINKY UP.”
