Britney Spears‘ sons are looking out for her.

The pop star’s sons Sean Preston, 20, and Jayden James, 19, played a “big part” in getting her into a treatment facility following her recent DUI arrest, a source tells PEOPLE exclusively.

“She was very upset and shaken after her arrest. And she’s terrified of going to jail. It’s taken weeks for her to realize that going to rehab is the best option,” the source says.

“Her team has pushed for treatment since her arrest,” the insider continues. “People around her do care a lot and are constantly trying to support her, but it can be difficult. There have been a lot of concerns since the arrest.”

The source added that Spears’ two sons, whom she shares with ex-husband Kevin Federline, have shown their support.

“Her sons were a big part of getting her to rehab. They’ve been clear with her. They just want her to be healthy,” the insider said.

On Sunday, April 12, a rep for Spears confirmed to PEOPLE that she checked herself into a treatment facility. The move comes after the “Womanizer” singer was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol on March 4 in Ventura, Calif.

The singer’s erratic social media presence has drawn concern from fans in the years since the termination of her conservatorship in November 2021.

“There was a system in place during the conservatorship. Her life was structured and more stable. There were people guiding decisions and making sure things stayed on track. With her independence, you started to see more instability in her day-to-day life,” the source says.

A rep for Spears did not respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

After Spears was released on March 5 following her arrest, a rep told PEOPLE in a statement that the “unfortunate incident” was “completely inexcusable.”

“Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law, and hopefully this can be the first step in a long-overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life,” the statement continued. “Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time.”

Her rep added that Spears’ sons “are going to be spending time with her.”

“Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for well-being,” the rep shared.

Spears shared a video on Instagram three weeks after her arrest of her spending time with her sons. “Thank you guys for all your support… spending time with family and friends is such a blessing !!! 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹,” she wrote in her caption. “Stay kind !!!”

The singer also caught up with some old friends before checking into the treatment facility.

The Grammy winner was previously placed under two psychiatric holds — which police, social workers and other mental health professionals have the authority to use if a person is considered a danger to themselves or others — weeks apart in January 2008. Spears also spent more than three months in a rehab facility in 2018.
