Key Points

  • Paramount+ has renewed The Madison for a third season.

  • The announcement comes before the release of the show’s second season, which is slated to air on the streamer at a later date.

  • The Taylor Sheridan-penned series stars Michelle Pfeiffer as a grieving widow struggling to process life after her husband, played by Kurt Russell, dies in a small plane crash.

The Clyburns’ story is only just beginning on The Madison.

The Taylor Sheridan-penned family drama starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Kurt Russell has been officially greenlit for a third season, Paramount+ announced on Tuesday. The move comes ahead of the release of the show’s second season, which has already been filmed but does not have a set air date.

The renewal won’t come as a major surprise to Entertainment Weekly readers, given Paramount+’s executive vice president and head of originals, Jane Wiseman, previously expressed her hope that the series would “continue on” beyond season 2 in our March cover story.

“I mean, this is, again, a love story — and an evolution,” she said at the time, “and so I do feel like there’s a lot more to tell.”

What no one could’ve expected was the instant fan reaction to The Madison, which earned the title of Sheridan’s most-watched television series debut ever with an impressive 8 million global views in its first 10 days on the streamer alone. It racked up almost 1 billion minutes viewed in that same week.

The series, which is directed by Sheridan’s longtime collaborator Christina Alexandra Voros, follows the Clyburn family — helmed by mom Stacy (Pfeiffer) — as they travel to Montana to bury their patriarch Preston (Russell) after he dies in a small plane crash with his brother Paul (Matthew Fox).

“A tragedy affects families in such fascinating ways, and it brings the most raw emotions — good, bad, and ugly — to the surface,” Voros explained to EW in March. “And what’s so interesting about the way that The Madison is written is you are allowed to peek through the lens of many different experiences of grief, and to see it felt from the perspective of someone who’s been in a marriage for 40 years, and a granddaughter who has only had nine years with this person. You not only see how people deal with loss individually, but how it affects each other and the family dynamic.”

As they adjust to life without Preston, the New York City family is also forced to adapt to their new environment, with some coming to appreciate the great outdoors much more than others.

“That’s something beautiful that Taylor does in his writing,” Voros added. “I think he said something once that, as he writes, he tries to create characters that people will love and then do crazy things to them. And watching them try to deal with something that they don’t have the tools to deal with is at times heartbreaking, and at times hysterical.”

Season 1 of The Madison is streaming now on Paramount+.
