A Martha Stewart biopic is in the works, and it has cast a two-time Oscar winner as the iconic TV personality. Janicza Bravo, who has previously helmed 2020’s Zola, will direct the movie.

New report says Cate Blanchett has been cast as Martha Stewart in Good Thing

According to a Variety report, Cate Blanchett has joined the cast of Good Thing as Martha Stewart. Ricky Tollman has written the screenplay. Blanchett is producing the project with Coco Francini of Dirty Films, Randy Manis, and Neil Dodson.

The news comes amid Stewart telling the same outlet that she had been “hearing rumors” about the project during an interview at the New York gala screening of Brunello: The Gracious Visionary. Stewart added, “I think there is something in the works right now with Cate Blanchett called Good Thing.”

The movie title likely references Stewart’s iconic catchphrase, “It’s a good thing.”

Over the years, Stewart, 84, has established herself as one of the most influential figures in lifestyle media. She was arguably at the height of her career in the ’90s and 2000s, releasing multiple best-selling books and serving as the host of syndicated shows Martha Stewart Living and Martha (alternatively, The Martha Stewart Show). She also published a popular magazine that shared the name with the former series.

Stewart garnered numerous accolades throughout her career, including several Daytime Emmys. She experienced legal troubles in the early 2000s and received a five-month prison sentence and two years of supervised release in 2004 for obstructing a federal investigation into a stock sale of the biopharmaceutical firm ImClone Systems Inc. (via The Los Angeles Times).

Meanwhile, Blanchett has the Best Supporting Oscar accolade for her performance as Katharine Hepburn in 2004’s The Aviator. She won the Best Actress award for the 2013 black comedy-drama Blue Jasmine.

Previously, Cybill Shepherd portrayed Stewart in TV movies Martha, Inc.: The Story of Martha Stewart and Martha: Behind Bars.
