Name: M.L. Liebler
History: This internationally recognized Detroit poet is a professor of English at Wayne State University. He’s also the director of the WSU Humanities Commons and the Detroit Writers’ Guild and is a member of the Magic Poetry Band. Filmmaker Michael Moore has called him “the poet laureate of America’s working class.”
The latest: In March, Liebler released “Hound Dog: A Poet’s Memoir of Rock, Revolution and Redemption,” a music-themed heartfelt memoir about his Detroit area upbringing and his path as a writer and activist. The book is described as the story of “the life of a man who has spent over fifty years championing artistic expression in all its forms.”
Up next: Liebler has two events next week in support of “Hound Dog.” The first is 6 p.m. April 21 at the WSU Planetarium. “Hound Dog Under the Stars” is a night of memoir, music and poetry with the Magic Poetry Band and poet Diane DeCillis. Liebler will read from his book and perform with the band.
On April 23 at 7 p.m., there will be a “Hound Dog” release party with live music at the Aretha Jazz Cafe, inside Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts at 350 Madison in Detroit. Admission is free, and there will be performances M.L. Liebler & the Magic Poetry Band, Jackamo and the Plushies.
