Rising singer-songwriter Deportee based in Detroit, Michigan, and St. Mary, Jamaica, is known for a sound shaped by a life across cultures releases two new singles, “Black Women Are Not Cheap, “ and “Too Pretty” which features an accompanying music video.
Raised as the son of a U.S. diplomat in eight countries, Deportee learned to absorb culture intentionally rather than imitate it. That global upbringing fuels a genre-fluid approach, moving effortlessly through R&B Reggae, Dancehall, and Hip-Hop while leaving a distinct imprint on each. Speaking about the inspiration for his single “Women Are Not Cheap,” DePortee shared “My new single is actually a reaction to the music video for Young Nudy’s ‘Peaches and Eggplants’ from 2023. I remember a scene from the video where a man grabs a woman’s behind and you never see the woman’s face, just her butt. To me it was kind of off putting and made her look cheap. I felt a protest swell inside me and the words ‘Black Women Are Not Cheap’ came to me.”
With his songs “Getting Back With My Ex,” and ” Pressure Point” both reaching the #1 spot on iTunes Reggae charts in Mexico and Bermuda, respectively, Deportee is an artist to put on your radar.
