Justin Bieber has never done it for me. I would say it’s because I’m too old (a year older than him) but that didn’t stop me from developing debilitating crushes on other age-appropriate pop stars as a teen: Harry Styles, Nick Jonas, Zac Efron—who’s not technically a pop star, but was at least spiritually so at a certain point in the late 2000s. All that to say, I deeply understand the latent fan crush that can exist within a grown woman. And at Coachella’s second weekend, we saw a beautiful example of that in action, when Bieber brought Billie Eilish onstage to serenade her with “One Less Lonely Girl.”
Well, actually, it was more that his wife, Hailey Bieber (who was a Belieber before she was a Bieber—forever kudos on that one, girl), cajoled Eilish and kind of pushed her out of the front-row celebrity pen, and she jogged onto the stage. I can’t tell if she was crying, but she was genuinely overwhelmed—and Bieber seemed to be actually enjoying himself, a seeming rarity these days.
Bieber also invited SZA, Big Sean, and Sexxy Red onstage to perform with him, which really just highlighted how barebones his set was last weekend.
But it hasn’t slowed down Bieber fever, which is apparently alive and well: His clothing brand, Skylrk (which, yes, exists and has the name of a failed 2015 Silicon Valley startup), made $5 million over Coachella—on top of his $10 million show fee. I don’t have a particularly trenchant thing to say about those amounts but like, people are dying, Kim.
Other Coachella weekend 2 highlights included more legendary guest star appearances (Madonna during Sabrina Carpenter’s set); more singers being fans of other singers (my favorite was Sabrina at Geese); and The Strokes playing a montage that called out U.S. foreign intervention over the past half century, including the assassination of Patrice Lumumba, the overthrow of Salvador Allende, and more recent videos showing the U.S.-backed destruction of universities in Iran and Palestine. For people who’ve been fans of The Strokes since “New York City Cops,” it’s nice that their politics are consistent.
