Ma Fest, paying homage to the “rich cultural traditions of the South” and named after Columbus native Gertrude “Ma” Rainey, known as the “Mother of the Blues,” will take place this Saturday from 4-9 p.m., according to a news release from the Columbus Consolidated Government.
The news release says the event will be at the Historic Liberty Theatre & Cultural Arts Center and will be an outdoor celebration with food, live entertainment, vendors and “community pride.”
Rainey was born in Columbus in April 1886. She signed a recording contract with Paramount and recorded music with other artists, including Louis Armstrong.
“Blues, BBQ and Jazz will be heavily embedded throughout the experience, creating a soulful soundtrack and flavor that pays homage to the rich cultural traditions of the South,” the news release says.
“The festival will transform the surrounding streets into a high-energy, front porch-themed celebration infused with block party spirit and Black Wall Street inspired vibrancy,” the news release says.
The festival will feature live jazz performances, blues tributes, historical reenactments, local artisans, barbecue food vendors, creative installations and more, according to the news release.
“Ma Fest is more than a festival, it is a movement to celebrate legacy, empower creativity, and build economic & cultural momentum for Columbus,” the news release says.
