Dave Chappelle emphasized in a recent sit-down interview with PBS News Hour that Donald Trump has “cultivated a broth of confusion” in his second term and suggested that the president didn’t take his advice to leave pettiness at the White House door in January 2025.
The comedian stressed that Americans want to have “some semblance of peace,” which they can arrive at in “different ways.”
“Being a president seems like an opportunity to be a very unifying force, and I feel like perhaps he squandered that opportunity, to put it lightly,” Chappelle said of Trump in his interview with Amna Nawaz.
Earlier in the interview, the comedian chuckled when Nawaz asked him how Trump is faring in the Oval Office this time around.
“You’re joking, right? Nobody wants to feel this way,” Chappelle replied before arguing that no one wanted the Iran war, a conflict he suggested America is losing.
Just days before Trump took the oath of office for a second time, Chappelle used his “Saturday Night Live” hosting gig to declare that the presidency is “no place for petty people” before calling on Trump to “do better” this time.
Chappelle’s words of advice followed Trump’s 2024 campaign in which he entertained targeting his foes upon his return to Washington.
In the year and three months since his second inauguration, the president has done just that in addition to using his Truth Social platform to launch petty, public attacks against his critics, living or deceased.
“I believe in that same monologue, I reminded him that everyone on Earth is counting on him,” Chappelle said.
He proceeded to liken the role of stand-up comedians to leadership positions like the office of the presidency, “We have to suffer slights and injuries and we have to kind of just let some things go. And we have to focus on what’s actually important.”
