Carolina Flores Gómez, a former Miss Teen Universe Baja California winner, was found dead in her luxury apartment in Mexico City after suffering a fatal gunshot wound to the head.
Carolina Flores Gómez, a former beauty queen from Mexico, was found dead in her apartment with a gunshot wound to the head.
Gómez, who recently turned 27, was found dead in the Polanco neighborhood of Mexico City last Thursday, reports Reporte Indigio, a Mexican news outlet. No arrests or charges have been made yet in the case, but the police are reportedly investigating Gómez’s mother-in-law. Some are asking that Gómez’s death be treated as a case of femicide. Authorities revealed that they believe the young woman was at her home with her husband, Alejandro Gómez, and her mother-in-law, Erika Maria, when she was shot.
Gómez was the winner of the 2017 Miss Teen Universe for Baja California. One recent beauty pageant contestant suffered an on-stage mishap when her veneers fell out.

The Mexico Prosecutor’s Office is treating Gómez’s death as an intentional homicide case.
Marina del Pilar Avila, Governor of Baja California, emphasized that authorities would be investigating Gómez’s death.
“No crime against a woman should go unpunished,” Avila said, “Our thoughts are with her family during this devastating time.” Roughly 10 women a day are murdered in Mexico, with only one percent of cases ending in sentencing.
Authorities believe Gómez was shot on April 15, but her death was not reported until the next day. After being called to the home, paramedics confirmed that Gómez was dead. The delay in reporting has caused suspicion among police.
Staff at Gómez’s luxury apartment complex did not report hearing gunshots or witnessing anything out of the ordinary or suspicious at the time of her death. The complex is known for its robust security. Now, forensic teams are searching Gómez’s apartment for evidence of foul play.
Many are calling for Gómez’s death to be treated as an act of femicide. Femicide is the intentional, gender-motivated killing of women and girls, most often by men.
Gómez was born in Ensenada in Baja California, a state in Northern Mexico bordering California. According to the Women’s Network of Baja California, nearly half of the women killed in the state were murdered in their own homes.
“They need to do more to analyze the evidence to determine why the victim was killed, what led to the crime, and there needs to be more in terms of reparations for victims’ families,” said Miriam Ayón Cano, president of the Women’s Network of Baja California.
“We still have a lot of violent deaths against women that go without being investigated,” she continued.
The study by the Women’s Network also reported that 12 percent of femicides occurred in public and 10 percent were committed in the woman’s place of work. Most murders happened between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m.
The investigation into Gómez’s death is still ongoing.
